What is Machine?

For example Lathe machine in which electric energy supplied by the motor is utilized for doing some useful work such as turning, facing, chamfering, etc.

A machine element is an individual component or group of components that perform a specific function.

It may be used for power transmission, for holding the components, or for providing support.

Types of Machine Elements

According to the functions to be performed, the machine elements are divided into the following three categories.

1. Power Transmitting Elements

These elements are used to transmit power from one part to another part of a machine.

For example Shafts, Gears, Belts, Pulleys, Clutches, Cams, Chains, etc.

2. Holding elements

These elements are used to hold various parts of a machine.

For example Nuts, Bolts, Pins, Rivets, etc.

3. Supporting elements

These elements are used to support various parts of a machine.

For example Bearings, Axles, Brackets, Beds, etc.
